drayer physical therapy salem ohio: Chronobiotechnology and Chronobiological Engineering L.E. Scheving, Franz Halberg, Charles F. Ehret, 2012-12-06 High blood pressure (BP) (with fats and smoking) is one of the three roots of cardio-cerebro-renovascular disease affecting up to 25% of the adult population. Hence, high blood pressure should be recognized and treated, to reduce any complications and prolong life, as noted by Michael Weber of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach, California. He further emphasizes the need for monitoring before one starts the treatment of high blood pressure. Indeed, he refers to the results of the Australian study on mild hypertension with a large percentage of placebo responders and rightly suggests that many people are treated who should not be because of 'white-coat-associated high blood pressure'. He also points to the lack of standardization of techniques for data analysis and of methods of BP measurement. Ambulatory monitoring under usual condi tions without concomitant recording of events does not allow even a qualitative assessment of the impact of varying stimuli, in weber's opinion. |

drayer physical therapy salem ohio: Scientific and Humane Issues in the Use of Random Source Dogs and Cats in Research National Research Council, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Institute for Laboratory Animal Research, Committee on Scientific and Humane Issues in the Use of Random Source Dogs and Cats in Research, 2009-11-30 Scientific and Humane Issues in the Use of Random-Source Dogs and Cats in Research examines the value of random-source animals in biomedical research and the role of Class B dealers who acquire and resell live dogs and cats to research institutions. Findings include that, while some random-source dogs and cats may be necessary and desirable for National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research, there is no clear need to obtain those animals from Class B dealers. Several options for random-source animal acquisition already exist and additional options are recommended, which would further ensure the welfare of these animals and foster a positive public image for NIH. While the scientific community has recognized and responded to concerns for humane treatment of animals in research, government oversight has thus far been unable to fully enforce the Animal Welfare Act in regard to Class B dealers of live animals. Although the animals acquired by Class B dealers are destined for research-and NIH research in particular-the standard of care while in the possession of some Class B dealers requires an inordinate amount of government enforcement and is not commensurate with the policies of most NIH-funded research laboratories. This dichotomy of standards reflects poorly on public perceptions of NIH and jeopardizes animal welfare. This book will be crucial for NIH and other groups using random-source animals in research, including veterinary schools and research facilities. Animal welfare advocates, policy makers, and concerned pet owners will also find this a vital and informative work for reconciling the needs of research with the welfare of animals. |
drayer physical therapy salem ohio: Preventing Drowning World Health Organization, 2017 Far too many people around the world know the pain of losing a loved one to drowning. Each year almost 360 000 people die from drowning--over 90% of them in low- and middle income countries. More than half of these deaths are among those younger than 25, with children aged under 5 facing the greatest risk. Drowning is the third leading cause of death worldwide for those aged from 5 to 14. Despite these tragic facts, drowning prevention gets relatively little attention and few resources. There is far more we can do to prevent drowning. Global commitments made as part of the Sustainable Development Goals, for example, cannot be met as long as this preventable cause of death is left largely unchecked. All of us--policymakers, parents, non-profit organizations, businesses and concerned citizens--can help prevent drowning. Explaining how is the goal of this guide. Building on the World Health Organization's 2014 Global report on drowning, the following pages provide practical, step-by-step guidance on how to implement 10 effective measures to prevent drowning. They range from community-based solutions, such as day care for children and barriers controlling access to water, to effective national policies and legislation around water safety, including setting and enforcing boating, shipping and ferry regulations. Data show that all of these solutions can help save lives. The more we work together to implement the measures outlined in this guide, the more lives can be saved. We urge all concerned to adopt as many of the interventions and strategies as their resources will allow, and to protect those most vulnerable without delay. p. IV. |

drayer physical therapy salem ohio: Urban Services to Ecosystems Chiara Catalano, Maria Beatrice Andreucci, Riccardo Guarino, Francesca Bretzel, Manfredi Leone, Salvatore Pasta, 2021 The aim of this book is to bring together multidisciplinary research in the field of green infrastructure design, construction and ecology. The main core of the volume is constituted by contributions dealing with green infrastructure, vegetation science, nature-based solutions and sustainable urban development. The green infrastructure and its ecosystem services, indeed, are gaining space in both political agendas and academic research. However, the attention is focused on the services that nature is giving for free to and for human health and survival. What if we start to see things from another perspective? Our actions shall converge for instance to turn man-made environment like cities from heterotrophic to autotrophic ecosystems. From landscape ecology to urban and building design, like bricks of a wall, from the small scale to the bigger landscape scale via ecological networks and corridors, we should start answering these questions: what are the services that are we offering to Nature? What are we improving? How to implement our actions? This book contains three Open Access chapters, which are licensed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). |

drayer physical therapy salem ohio: Platelets and Megakaryocytes Jonathan M. Gibbins, Martyn P. Mahaut-Smith, 2008-02-04 12 The average human body has in the order of 10 circulating platelets. They are crucial for hemostasis, and yet excessive platelet activation is a major cause of m- bidity and mortality in western societies. It is therefore not surprising that platelets have become one of the most extensively investigated biological cell types. We are, however, far from understanding precisely how platelets become activated under physiological and pathophysiological conditions. In addition, there are large gaps in our knowledge of platelet production from their giant precursor cell, the megakar- cyte. Understanding megakaryocyte biology will be crucial for the development of platelet gene targeting. The aim of Platelets and Megakaryocytes is therefore to bring together established and recently developed techniques to provide a comprehensive guide to the study of both the platelet and the megakaryocyte. It consists of five s- tions split between two volumes. The more functional assays appear in Volume 1, whereas Volume 2 includes signaling techniques, postgenomic methods, and a n- ber of key perspectives chapters. Part I of Volume 1, Platelets and Megakaryocytes: Functional Assays, describes many well established approaches to the study of platelet function, including aggregometry, secretion, arachidonic acid metabolism, procoagulant responses, pla- let adhesion under static or flow conditions, flow cytometry, and production of microparticles. Although one would ideally wish to perform experiments with human platelets, studies within the circulation using intravital microscopy require the use of animal models, which are described in Chapter 16, vol. 1. |

drayer physical therapy salem ohio: The Doctor's Doctor John Laszlo, Francis A. Neelon, 2006 This book tells the story of a remarkable physician and teacher - a clear and practical thinker who changed the face of medical education in this country. Eugene A. Stead, Jr., taught young doctors how to meet the patient on the patient's terms, how to understand what the patient wanted and needed, and then how best to provide those services. He set standards of hard work and dedication that changed forever the careers of those who came within his orbit, and students emerged from exposure to this master teacher distinguished from their peers both in terms of personal satisfaction and in their knowledge of medicine. Eugene A. Stead, Jr. rose from a poor Georgia family to become one of the most well-known and influential medical educators in the country. His tutelage produced more chairs of medicine departments than any other medical educator of the mid-20th century. He conceived the idea of an entirely new medical profession - the physician assistant - and saw his brainchild through to maturity. One of the results of his influence was the transformation of Duke University Medical Center from a small regional school into one of the top medical centers in the world. His ideas about education in general, about aging and chronic illness, about the roles of doctors, nurses, hospitals and nursing homes, though not always conventional and often in stark opposition to the status quo, are instructive not only for the medical community but for everyone who strives for excellence.--BOOK JACKET. |
drayer physical therapy salem ohio: Hand Bone Age Vicente Gilsanz, Osman Ratib, 2011-10-20 In the past, determination of bone maturity relied on visual evaluation of skeletal development in the hand and wrist, most commonly using the Greulich and Pyle atlas. The atlas integrates the key morphological features of ossification in the bones of the hand and wrist and provides idealized, sex- and age-specific images of skeletal development New to this revised second edition is a description and user manual for Bone Age for iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®, which can be purchased and used separately from this book. The App can be easily employed to calculate the deviation of the patient’s age from the normal range and to predict a possible growth delay. This easy-to-use atlas and the related App will be invaluable for radiologists, endocrinologists, and pediatricians and also relevant to forensic physicians. |
