dural venous sinus anatomy: Pearls and Pitfalls in Emergency Radiology Martin L. Gunn, 2013-05-02 Rapid recognition of life-threatening illnesses and injuries expedites appropriate management and improves clinical outcomes. False-positive interpretations in radiology have been identified as a significant cause of error, leading to unnecessary investigation and treatment, increased healthcare costs, and delays in appropriate management. Moreover, it is important that radiologists do not miss important subtle diagnoses that need urgent intervention. Pearls and Pitfalls in Emergency Radiology provides an outline of common imaging artefacts, anatomic variants and critical diagnoses that the radiologist must master in order to guide appropriate care and avoid malpractice lawsuits. One hundred selected cases – illustrated with several hundred images from MRI, MDCT, PET, ultrasound and radiographs – are presented in a succinct and structured format, highlighting key pearls and potential diagnostic pitfalls. The text focuses on emergent presentations of diseases in all body regions in both adults and children. |

dural venous sinus anatomy: Multidetector-Row CT Angiography Roberto Passariello, 2005-08-02 Multidetector-row CT has dramatically improved the results of computed tomography in all clinical applications, but its beneficial impact has been most striking in vascular imaging. The simplicity of acquisition and the wide availability of equipment make this modality especially suitable for routine clinical application. In this book the basic aspects of multidetector-row CT angiography are comprehensively reviewed. Individual chapters are included on technical principles, image processing techniques and contrast agent administration. All clinical applications are then discussed in depth, with lucid descriptions of the examination technique for particular clinical indications and of the findings that characterize specific diseases. Limitations and advantages in comparison with other imaging modalities are considered. A large number of high-quality black and white and color illustrations help to explain the clinical findings. |

Georgiadis, 2011-04-14 Endovascular intervention - using medication and devices introduced through catheters or microcatheters placed into the blood vessels through a percutaneous approach - has emerged as a relatively new minimally invasive approach to treat cerebrovascular disease and possibly intracranial neoplasms. This textbook provides a comprehensive review of principles pertinent to endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and intracranial tumors, with a detailed description of techniques for these procedures and periprocedural management strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on expert interpretation of the quality of evidence provided and implications for practice related to endovascular procedures. This will be essential reading for clinicians working in interventional neurology and cardiology, endovascular neurosurgery, vascular surgery and neuroradiology. |

dural venous sinus anatomy: The Cerebral Circulation Marilyn J. Cipolla, 2016-07-28 This e-book will review special features of the cerebral circulation and how they contribute to the physiology of the brain. It describes structural and functional properties of the cerebral circulation that are unique to the brain, an organ with high metabolic demands and the need for tight water and ion homeostasis. Autoregulation is pronounced in the brain, with myogenic, metabolic and neurogenic mechanisms contributing to maintain relatively constant blood flow during both increases and decreases in pressure. In addition, unlike peripheral organs where the majority of vascular resistance resides in small arteries and arterioles, large extracranial and intracranial arteries contribute significantly to vascular resistance in the brain. The prominent role of large arteries in cerebrovascular resistance helps maintain blood flow and protect downstream vessels during changes in perfusion pressure. The cerebral endothelium is also unique in that its barrier properties are in some way more like epithelium than endothelium in the periphery. The cerebral endothelium, known as the blood-brain barrier, has specialized tight junctions that do not allow ions to pass freely and has very low hydraulic conductivity and transcellular transport. This special configuration modifies Starling's forces in the brain microcirculation such that ions retained in the vascular lumen oppose water movement due to hydrostatic pressure. Tight water regulation is necessary in the brain because it has limited capacity for expansion within the skull. Increased intracranial pressure due to vasogenic edema can cause severe neurologic complications and death. |
dural venous sinus anatomy: Surgical Neuroangiography Alejandro Berenstein, Pierre Lasjaunias, 2012-12-06 In Volume 5 of Surgical Neuroangiography we will discuss indications and approaches for endovascular treatment of disorders affecting the spine and spinal cord circulations. Our approach is similar to those discussed in volume 2 and 4, it requires integration of knowledge concerning functional vascular anatomy, lesion angioarchitecture, and the relationship between normal and pathological circulations. In AVMs these features are considered as they relate to the clinical presen tation, progression, and natural history of the lesion. All these factors must then be combined with an understanding of technical capabilities to for mulate a pretherapeutic plan designed to favorably affect the long term out come in the individual patient. Endovascular surgery of spinal cord AVMs has become the treatment of choice, while microsurgery is reserved for those cases where embolization fails. Endovascular surgery may be the sole form of treatment, or may be combined with other therapeutic modalities including surgery, chemothera py, or radiation in cases of neoplasms, or may be palliative, to decrease pain or spinal cord compression. As in all other areas a multidisciplinary ap proach is essential for decision making to best accomplish the desired ob jectives. |
dural venous sinus anatomy: Handbook on Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Valeria Caso, Giancarlo Agnelli, Maurizio Paciaroni, 2008 Cerebral veins contain about 70% of the total cerebral blood volume, but cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) occurs about a thousand times less often than arterial stroke. CVT affects mostly young adults and children, and in about one quarter of cases the cause remains unknown. Written by international experts, this publication is dealing with epidemiology, risk factors, coagulation disorders, clinical presentation - especially focusing on headache, current neuroradiological treatment, complications and long-term prognosis of CVT. The book covers the full spectrum of CVT pathogenesis and offers a new and effective approach to improve earlier diagnosis, recognize new risk factors and to identify the most severe manifestations, which require more aggressive treatments. Neurologists, interventional neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and all physicians who are involved in the care of patients with CVT will welcome this publication as a useful and up-to-date clinical guide. |
dural venous sinus anatomy: Emergency Cross-sectional Radiology Daniel Y. F. Chung, Dipanjali Mondal, Erskine J. Holmes, Rakesh Misra, 2012-04-19 Cross-sectional imaging plays an ever-increasing role in the management of the acutely ill patient. There is 24/7 demand for radiologists at all levels of training to interpret complex scans, and alongside this an increased expectation that the requesting physician should be able to recognise important cross-sectional anatomy and pathology in order to expedite patient management. Emergency Cross-sectional Radiology addresses both these expectations. Part I demystifies cross-sectional imaging techniques. Part II describes a wide range of emergency conditions in an easy-to-read bullet point format. High quality images reinforce the findings, making this an invaluable rapid reference in everyday clinical practice. Emergency Cross-sectional Radiology is a practical aide-memoire for emergency medicine physicians, surgeons, acute care physicians and radiologists in everyday reporting or emergency on-call environments. |
