flight training full speed ahead: Full speed ahead Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Business, Innovation and Skills Committee, 2010-03-22 Motorsport and aerospace are two industries in which the United Kingdom is a world leader and the Committee believes that the future success of the UK economy will be based on these types of industries. Concerns regarding the aerospace included the current US complaint in the World Trade organisation and the Government's right to support the industry through Repayable Launch Investment; and that the UK aerospace sector has access to export trade credit at less favourable rates and through a more complex system than other countries. In examining the motorsport industry the Committee felt that there was a lack of understanding and effective engagement by Government. They are not content with the Government's current plans to take forward its work with the sector through the UK Automotive Council. Instead they recommend that the Government establish a dedicated motorsport policy team within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Small and medium-sized enterprises also play a very important role in supporting both sectors but they have been hit worst by the recession and the Government needs to do more to encourage high performance engineering firms to diversify. Both sectors require a highly skilled workforce and more needs to be done to align the education system with the skills needs of the industries. Finally is the problem of the 'non-green' image that both industries have.
flight training full speed ahead: Comet! Graham M. Simons, 2013-11-14 “A masterpiece of the most diligent research and extraordinary detail and surely represents the definitive study of the Comet . . . a terrific book.”—Royal Aeronautical Society This volume from the respected and well-regarded aviation historian and author Graham Simons is “a solid book of such scope that you’ll probably consult it for a lot more than just Comet material” (SpeedReaders.info). Extensively illustrated throughout, Comet! features details lifted directly from enquiry and salvage reports, much of which have never been published before and offers a unique insight into the failures and tragedies that blighted the early days of development, laying down lessons that were ultimately to benefit later designs. As part of his research into the book, the author met and interviewed Harry Povey, the De Havilland Production Manager and John Cunningham, the Comet test pilot who would be the first to experience flight at the helms of the iconic craft. Both of these first-hand accounts are relayed in the book, adding a deeper sense of authenticity and a more personalized account of proceedings than facts and reports alone are able to achieve. Attention is also paid to the derivative Nimrod design, and the book features an interview that the author conducted with the aircraft commander of the last ever Nimrod operational flight. Interviews of this kind are supplemented by the author’s own narrative of proceedings, setting personal experience within historical context and exploring the themes and historical topics that the interviews evoke. “An outstanding account of the life of the Comet . . . all readers will find inspiration and achievement in the tale.”—Firetrench

flight training full speed ahead: Bottle to Throttle Rob Grunke, 2003 ...PILOT BUSTED! Recent TV and Newspaper headlines have brought to the public's attention yet another issue affecting the safety of our Nation's Airline Industry...the latest growing issue since Terrorism...BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVELS OF PILOTS! BOTTLE TO THROTTLE is the first of its kind sizzling and true account by Captain Rob...a seasoned Commercial Airline Pilot...and also a seasoned Drinker...(his book is presently under consideration as a screenplay). Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking...It would be my last flight shamefully, from captain Rob to Captain Drunk. Minutes later he was blowing into a Breathalyzer...and also blowing twenty-six years of flying! Yesterday he had been on the brink. He takes you on an incredible journey to his past with the hope of sorting out how it had led to today's LIVING NIGHTMARE! Written with humor and compassion, covering sensitive issues of today that began long ago...his life begins as a kid growing up in the BRONX! The seeds were sown by an Army of Drunks on both sides of the family! Had his path to drinking begun at age seven with a sip of beer on Thanksgiving Day or perhaps with the whiskey-dripping cherries? Had his Catholic school nuns and priests given him and other kids good reason to drink? It never dawned on me that this MAN OF GOD actually enjoyed beatings, especially at swimming practice...we in our skintight Speedos. Was he later charged as a pedophile? The Captain's life continues to lead you through numerous escapades of grade school beer, high school booze, more booze at college, the drinking man's Navy, Europe's bars, South American bars, the alcohol vending machines of Asia, plus more, more, more of everything in California...then later his drinking career comes to an abrupt halt in SIN-CITY Las Vegas, Nevada! The Author recently went through a rehabilitation program for his alcohol addiction and shares this positive turning point in his life with readers! He's the son of a New York City Fireman, a graduate of Fordham University, a former Naval Officer, and Senior Captain and Instructor. BOTTLE TO THROTTLE serves as a reminder to his fellow Pilots of their great responsibility regarding the lives entrusted to them. It is also about Alcohol and the question...when does it become a problem? ...Statistics prove that 99% of all American households have at least one TV and that the public's demand for media truth escalated during the Clinton years and rose even higher with the events of September 11, 2001. While Rob's book may be particularly newsworthy on several subjects, his audience is not limited. His unique style of writing plus one continuous adventure after another result in a book that readers will not want to put down...regardless of profession, age, or gender

flight training full speed ahead: Ted Williams Leigh Montville, 2005-03-15 The Kid. The Splendid Splinter. Teddy Ballgame. One of the greatest figures of his generation, and arguably the greatest baseball hitter of all time. But what made Ted Williams a legend – and a lightning rod for controversy in life and in death? Still a gangly teenager when he stepped into a Boston Red Sox uniform in 1939, Williams’s boisterous personality and penchant for towering home runs earned him adoring admirers and venomous critics. In 1941, the entire country followed Williams's stunning .406 season, a record that has not been touched in over six decades. Then at the pinnacle of his prime, Williams left Boston to train and serve as a fighter pilot in World War II, missing three full years of baseball, making his achievements all the more remarkable. Ted Willams's personal life was equally colorful. His attraction to women (and their attraction to him) was a constant. He was married and divorced three times and he fathered two daughters and a son. He was one of corporate America's first modern spokesmen, and he remained, nearly into his eighties, a fiercely devoted fisherman. With his son, John Henry Williams, he devoted his final years to the sports memorabilia business, even as illness overtook him. And in death, controversy and public outcry followed Williams and the disagreements between his children over the decision to have his body preserved for future resuscitation in a cryonics facility--a fate, many argue, Williams never wanted. With unmatched verve and passion, and drawing upon hundreds of interviews, acclaimed best-selling author Leigh Montville brings to life Ted Williams's superb triumphs, lonely tragedies, and intensely colorful personality, in a biography that is fitting of an American hero and legend.

flight training full speed ahead: The Cream Dick Harper, 2015-06-26 On January 27, 1943, nineteen-year-old Dick Harper received orders to report to Miami Beach, Florida, to begin Aviation Cadet training, with the lofty goal of becoming a combat pilot in the United States Army Air Corps. Hes leaving the security of his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina for strange, unknown places and an uncertain future, with the ultimate purpose of fighting a war. It was a huge turning point in his life. In The Cream, Harper offers a retrospective of his personal experiences in Aviation Cadet training during World War II. He details his odyssey as he travels from a small Southern town and experiences the dangerous and exciting days and months of pilot training. He shares the disappointments and triumphs, humor and pathos, of his quest for the coveted Silver Wings of a combat pilot. He provides a frontline, inside view, of the rigors and exhilaration of this training. A memoir, The Cream narrates the hopes, frustrations, camaraderie, and ideals of the young men who earned, or attempted to earn, Silver Wings as pilots in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

flight training full speed ahead: War and the Arc of Human Experience Glenn Petersen, 2021-05-20 Glenn Petersen flew seventy combat missions in Vietnam when he was nineteen, launching from an aircraft carrier in the Tonkin Gulf. He’d sought out the weighty responsibilities and hazardous work. But why? What did the cultural architecture of the society he grew up in have to do with the way he went to war? In this book he looks at the war from an anthropological perspective because that’s how he’s made his living in all the subsequent years: it’s how he sees the world. While anthropologists write about the military and war these days, they do so from the perspective of researchers. What makes this a fully original contribution is that Petersen brings to the page the classic methodology of ethnographers, participant observation—a kind of total immersion. He writes from the dual perspectives of an insider and a researcher and seeks in the specifics of lived experience some larger conclusions about humans’ social lives in general. Petersen was long oblivious to what had happened to him in Vietnam and he fears that young men and women who’ve been fighting the US military’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq might be similarly unaware of what’s happened to them. Skills that allowed him to survive in combat, in particular his ability to focus tightly on the challenges directly in front of him, seemed to transfer well to life after war. The same intensity led him to a successful academic career, including the time he represented the Micronesian islands at the United Nations;how could anything be wrong? Then surreptitiously, the danger, the stress, and the trauma he’d hidden away broke through a brittle shell and the war came spilling out. As an anthropologist he sees in this a classic pattern: an adaptation to one set of conditions is put to a new and practical use when conditions change, but in time what had once been beneficial turns into maladaptive behavior. In writing about why we fight, he shed lights on what the fighting does to us.

flight training full speed ahead: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #3 Christopher Golden, Nancy Holder, 2012-09-27 As long as there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. One girl in all the world, to find them where they gather and to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers... Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Carnival of Souls: There is definitely something not quite right about the Travelling Carnival. When a once-shy pair of homely twins begin to parade around Sunnydale High like divas, Buffy and the others decide to investigate. But soon it becomes apparent that the price of admission is higher than they imagined. Willow is consumed by envy, Cordelia by greed, and Xander by gluttony. Angel reveals a dangerous new persona, while dark anger rises in Giles. More powerful still is the blinding pride that threatens to overwhelm Buffy and destroy all those she loves... Blooded: Chirayoju, a vampire of Chinese lore, and Sanno, the legendary Japanese Mountain King, have been locked in deadly battle for centuries. An ancient curse imprisoned the spirits of these two warriors in an antique sword; until the sword arrives in Sunnydale. Freed by accident, Chirayoju searches for a host body that will allow him to continue wreaking havoc among the living and the dead. Now Buffy's on the trail of this legendary vampire... a bloody trail that leads straight through the heart of the Buffy-Xander-Willow triangle. One Thing or Your Mother: It's tough being a teenage Slayer. On the verge of failing her junior year thanks to the annoying Principal Snyder, who seems to be acting even stranger than usual lately, Buffy agrees to meet with a tutor… one who may not have her best interests in mind. Not helping her studies is the fact that recently she's been exhausted, waking up each morning feeling more tired than she did the night before. Fighting off exhaustion, Buffy learns that Principal Snyder is the target of a sleep deprivation spell that has taken over Sunnydale. As sleep takes hold of the citizens of Sunnydale, Buffy begins to realize that unless she breaks the spell soon, the nightmare is just beginning.

flight training full speed ahead: Holding the Line Thomas McKelvey Cleaver, 2019-03-21 This is the gripping story of Task Force 77, the US Navy carrier commitment to the Korean War that was vital to the success of the UN forces battling the Chinese and North Koreans. Naval and air power were crucial to the United Nations' success in the Korean War, as it sought to negate the overwhelming Chinese advantage in manpower. In what became known as the 'long hard slog', naval aviators sought to slow and cut off communist forces and support troops on the ground. USS Leyte (CV-32) operated off Korea in the Sea of Japan for a record 93 continuous days to support the Marines in their epic retreat out of North Korea, and was crucial in the battles of the spring and summer of 1951 in which the UN forces again battled to the 38th Parallel. All of this was accomplished with a force that was in the midst of change, as jet aircraft altered the entire nature of naval aviation. Holding the Line chronicles the carrier war in Korea from the first day of the war to the last, focusing on front-line combat, while also describing the technical development of aircraft and shipboard operations, and how these all affected the broader strategic situation on the Korean Peninsula.
