earth science textbook high school: Earth Science Kevin Nelstead, 2016-06-20 This new text is presented in a style aimed at drawing students into close engagement with the subject matter, providing a solid education and fostering a sense of wonder and responsibility for God's amazing world. This text is perfect for middle school-aged students. It includes all the popular characteristics of Novare textbooks: smaller profile, vibrant, original, and relevant graphics, lucid conversational prose, and an approach that connects students with real-world science as stewards of God's creation. And of course, Novare's guiding principles of Mastery, Integration, and Kingdom perspective are woven throughout this text. Mastery learning is felt in the way key concepts, definitions, and skills are repeatedly brought up so that students rehearse and reencounter materials with a view toward more thorough retention of course content. We integrate relevant subjects such as mathematics, history, language skills, measurement, and more to both enhance the reading and demonstrate the connections that exist between all subjects. And Novare's Kingdom Perspective is evident in the attribution of the marvels of creation to God's creative power. Author Kevin Nelstead regularly draws the reader to appreciate the intricacy and excellence of God's works, tying in scripture where appropriate. Earth Science should be about much more than learning about rocks and mountains and the seasons. Think about how huge God's mandate to humans is that we are to steward and exhibit vice regency over creation! The best Christian curriculum will bring students into the wonder of God's astounding creation and foster the mind of a gracious and caring steward. Within the context of the fascinating study of landforms, minerals and planetary phenomena, many other timely and important topics are covered including conservation of natural resources, climate change, pollution, environmental justice, and the current scientific consensus concerning geologic history. |

earth science textbook high school: Exploring Earth Science Julia Johnson, Stephen Reynolds, 2015-02-06 Exploring Earth Science by Reynolds/Johnson is an innovative textbook intended for an introductory college geology course, such as Earth Science. This ground-breaking, visually spectacular book was designed from cognitive and educational research on how students think, learn, and study. Nearly all information in the book is built around 2,600 photographs and stunning illustrations, rather than being in long blocks of text that are not articulated with figures. These annotated illustrations help students visualize geologic processes and concepts, and are suited to the way most instructors already teach. To alleviate cognitive load and help students focus on one important geologic process or concept at a time, the book consists entirely of two-page spreads organized into 20 chapters. Each two-page spread is a self-contained block of information about a specific topic, emphasizing geologic concepts, processes, features, and approaches. These spreads help students learn and organize geologic knowledge in a new and exciting way. Inquiry is embedded throughout the book, modeling how scientists investigate problems. The title of each two-page spread and topic heading is a question intended to get readers to think about the topic and become interested and motivated to explore the two-page spread for answers. Each chapter is a learning cycle, which begins with a visually engaging two-page spread about a compelling geologic issue. Each chapter ends with an Investigation that challenges students with a problem associated with a virtual place. The world-class media, spectacular presentations, and assessments are all tightly articulated with the textbook. This book is designed to encourage students to observe, interpret, think critically, and engage in authentic inquiry, and is highly acclaimed by reviewers, instructors, and students. |

earth science textbook high school: Faith, Reason, & Earth History Leonard Brand, 2009 Faith, Reason, and Earth History presents Leonard Brand¿s argument for constructive thinking about origins and earth history in the context of Scripture, showing readers how to analyze available scientific data and approach unsolved problems. Faith does not need to fear the data, but can contribute to progress in understanding earth history within the context of God¿s Word while still being honest about unanswered questions. In this patient explanation of the mission of science, the author models his conviction that ¿above all, it is essential that we treat each other with respect, even if we disagree on fundamental issues.¿ The original edition of this work (1997) was one of the first books on this topic written from the point of view of an experienced research scientist. A career biologist, paleontologist, and teacher, Brand brings to this well-illustrated book a rich assortment of practical scientific examples. This thoughtful and rigorous presentation makes Brand¿s landmark work highly useful both as a college-level text and as an easily accessible treatment for the educated lay person. |

earth science textbook high school: Exploring Creation with Physical Science Jay L. Wile, 2007 This should be the last course a student takes before high school biology. Typically, we recommend that the student take this course during the same year that he or she is taking prealgebra. Exploring Creation With Physical Science provides a detailed introduction to the physical environment and some of the basic laws that make it work. The fairly broad scope of the book provides the student with a good understanding of the earth's atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere. It also covers details on weather, motion, Newton's Laws, gravity, the solar system, atomic structure, radiation, nuclear reactions, stars, and galaxies. The second edition of our physical science course has several features that enhance the value of the course: * There is more color in this edition as compared to the previous edition, and many of the drawings that are in the first edition have been replaced by higher-quality drawings. * There are more experiments in this edition than there were in the previous one. In addition, some of the experiments that were in the previous edition have been changed to make them even more interesting and easy to perform. * Advanced students who have the time and the ability for additional learning are directed to online resources that give them access to advanced subject matter. * To aid the student in reviewing the course as a whole, there is an appendix that contains questions which cover the entire course. The solutions and tests manual has the answers to those questions. Because of the differences between the first and second editions, students in a group setting cannot use both. They must all have the same edition. A further description of the changes made to our second edition courses can be found in the sidebar on page 32. |

earth science textbook high school: Next Generation Earth Systems Science at the National Science Foundation National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine, Policy and Global Affairs, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Committee on Advancing a Systems Approach to Studying the Earth a Strategy for the National Science Foundation, 2022-06-22 The National Science Foundation (NSF) has played a key role over the past several decades in advancing understanding of Earth's systems by funding research on atmospheric, ocean, hydrologic, geologic, polar, ecosystem, social, and engineering-related processes. Today, however, those systems are being driven like never before by human technologies and activities. Our understanding has struggled to keep pace with the rapidity and magnitude of human-driven changes, their impacts on human and ecosystem sustainability and resilience, and the effectiveness of different pathways to address those challenges. Given the urgency of understanding human-driven changes, NSF will need to sustain and expand its efforts to achieve greater impact. The time is ripe to create a next-generation Earth systems science initiative that emphasizes research on complex interconnections and feedbacks between natural and social processes. This will require NSF to place an increased emphasis on research inspired by real-world problems while maintaining their strong legacy of curiosity driven research across many disciplines ? as well as enhance the participation of social, engineering, and data scientists, and strengthen efforts to include diverse perspectives in research. |

earth science textbook high school: Formation of the Earth, Grade 9 Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, Erin E. Peters-Burton, 2022-05-23 What if you could challenge your ninth graders to use geologic theory and standards of measurement to explore different epochs and time periods of the Earth’s formation? With this volume in the STEM Road Map Curriculum Series, you can! Formation of the Earth outlines a journey that will steer your students toward authentic problem solving while grounding them in integrated STEM disciplines. Like the other volumes in the series, this book is designed to meet the growing need to infuse real-world learning into K–12 classrooms. This interdisciplinary, three-lesson module uses project- and problem-based learning to help students investigate how Earth science professionals gather information and develop theories about the formation of the Earth and the processes taking place since the proliferation of humans. Working in teams, students will work to identify, define and describe the attributes scientists use to delineate Earth’s eras, periods, and epochs, in order to determine the appropriate boundary event to define the Anthropocene Epoch, and will develop a publication-ready textbook entry for an Earth science textbook. To support this goal, students will do the following: • Identify, define, and describe attributes of eras, periods, and epochs which have marked geologic time in Earth’s history. • Evaluate various possible index layers and boundary events that mark the beginning of the Anthropocene Epoch to determine which is most appropriate when labeling the current epoch in Earth’s history. • Design and present a multimedia presentation to share with textbook publishers regarding information on the Anthropocene Epoch, to include in a secondary-level Earth science textbook. • Create a publication-ready textbook entry describing the Anthropocene Epoch. The STEM Road Map Curriculum Series is anchored in the Next Generation Science Standards, the Common Core State Standards, and the Framework for 21st Century Learning. In-depth and flexible, Formation of the Earth can be used as a whole unit or in part to meet the needs of districts, schools, and teachers who are charting a course toward an integrated STEM approach. |
