Due to their extractive activities, these mines store large quantities of wastes at the surface, which can be both physically and chemically unstable. Reclamation aims to return a mine site to a satisfactory state, meaning that the site should not threaten human health or security, should not generate in the long term any contaminant that could significantly affect the surrounding environment, and should be aesthetically acceptable to communities. This book focuses on the reclamation of waste storage areas, which constitute the main source of pollution during and after mine operations, and especially issues with acid mine drainage and neutral contaminated drainage. Average changes in ocean temperature, pH, and oxygenation are re-shaping marine communities, with significant impacts on the critical services that marine ecosystems provide to mankind. As global climate change continues, the frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme weather events are also predicted to increase, with fast and far-reaching consequences on marine species, including mass mortality and disruption of ecological processes. As a result, millions of ocean-dependent livelihoods and jobs are also at risk, with consequent economic impacts. Given the current climate and biodiversity crisis, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has emphasized the relevance of (1) increasing knowledge and protection of biodiversity and (2) assessing species climate-driven extinction risks. To achieve these goals, we need to understand organism-environment-ecology-evolution interactions at various levels of the biological hierarchy, from molecules to ecosystems. However, we are still lacking a comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms shaping phenotypic landscapes in the natural environment, and under different global change scenarios. To address such challenges, a new strategic program was also launched by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), “Molecules to Ecosystems”, to study life in context, and provide new research avenues in molecular life sciences. In this context, the emerging disciplines of Marine Omics and Marine Systems Biology will be key to supporting innovative solutions in marine ecosystem conservation and blue bioeconomy (for example uncover molecular traits underlying sensitivity/tolerance to environmental change, supporting assisted evolution approaches; molecular targets that can be used for diagnostics, monitoring and development of biotechnological applications). |

How is constructive cultural exchange possible when traditions hold such contradictory views? Answering this question and positioning both philosophical traditions in their respective intellectual and linguistic contexts, Jingjing Li argues that what Edmund Husserl means by essence differs from what Chinese Yogacarins mean by svabhava, partly because Husserl problematises the substantialist understanding of essence in European philosophy. Furthermore, she reveals that Chinese Yogacara has developed an account of self-transformation, ethics and social ontology that renders it much more than simply a Buddhist version of Husserlian phenomenology. fonds de recherche du québec - nature et technologies: Chemistry in Action: Making Molecular Movies with Ultrafast Electron Diffraction and Data Science Lai Chung Liu, 2020-09-10 The thesis provides the necessary experimental and analytical tools to unambiguously observe the atomically resolved chemical reactions. A great challenge of modern science has been to directly observe atomic motions during structural transitions, and while this was first achieved through a major advance in electron source brightness, the information content was still limited and new methods for image reconstruction using femtosecond electron diffraction methods were needed. One particular challenge lay in reconciling the innumerable possible nuclear configurations with the observation of chemical reaction mechanisms that reproducibly give the same kind of chemistry for large classes of molecules. The author shows that there is a simple solution that occurs during barrier crossing in which the highly anharmonic potential at that point in nuclear rearrangements couples high- and low-frequency vibrational modes to give highly localized nuclear motions, reducing hundreds of potential degrees of freedom to just a few key modes. Specific examples are given in this thesis, including two photoinduced phase transitions in an organic system, a ring closure reaction, and two direct observations of nuclear reorganization driven by spin transitions. The emerging field of structural dynamics promises to change the way we think about the physics of chemistry and this thesis provides tools to make it happen. |
