According to business executives, CSOs are hopelessly naïve, inefficient, and interfere in the market in ways that reduce economic growth. And yet, in the past decade more and more CSOs and businesses are collaborating in new ways. Individuals from both sectors are setting up social impact enterprises, and social investing funds are increasing. The more traditional forms of corporate-CSO collaboration have expanded as more funds are flowing from business to the social sector. The divide between the corporate sector and civil society seems to be narrowing. Why is this happening and what are its consequences? This book examines these trends in India, where since 2013 the state has mandated co-operation between the largest firms and NGOs in pursuit of inclusive and sustainable development. The field has well-intended goals emphasizing collaboration and dialogue between population health, public health, clinical care, and other disciplines to address socioeconomic determinants of health, and employing interdisciplinary approaches to address health inequities wherever they exist. Despite these lofty ideals, there are concerns that the field itself has historically served to reinforce rather than deconstruct colonialism and power imbalances. At this point in time, the field has evolved toward a vision of a community of practice between institutions across the income spectrum (HIC, LMIC, LIC) working in bidirectional and multidirectional ways to develop staff, stuff, space, systems and strategies to eliminate health disparities. However, with deeply rooted colonial assumptions, racism, elitism, and other forms of bias underlying institutions and individuals, initiatives operating under the auspices of Global Health are all too often antithetical to the pursuit itself. |

An emerging concept in the literacy field, many scholars agree on the need for students to develop global literacies, yet few agree on a widely accepted definition. Based on a synthesis of the literature, the editors formulate a definition of global literacies with four dimensions, including: literacy as a human right in all nations around the world; critical reading and creation of multimodal texts about global issues; intercultural communication and reciprocal collaboration with globally diverse others; and transformative action for social and environmental justice that traverses borders. Taking this shared, proposed definition as a starting point, the chapters then offer contextualized examples of global literacies from K-12 and teacher education classrooms to make explicit links between research and practice. The contributors interact with and interrogate the book’s definition of global literacies using a common framework of critical theory.
