Experiment productively. Develop patience, persistence, and confidence in their own ability to solve real problems. The entries in the curriculum section are grouped by scientific area--Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Multidisciplinary and Applied Science--and by type--core materials, supplementary materials, and science activity books. Additionally, a section of references for teachers provides annotated listings of books about science and teaching, directories and guides to science trade books, and magazines that will help teachers enhance their students' science education. Resources for Teaching Elementary School Science also lists by region and state about 600 science centers, museums, and zoos where teachers can take students for interactive science experiences. Annotations highlight almost 300 facilities that make significant efforts to help teachers. Another section describes more than 100 organizations from which teachers can obtain more resources. And a section on publishers and suppliers give names and addresses of sources for materials. Cianciolo, 2008 Lifelong Learning Centers (LLCs) comprise a suite of technologies that enable online posting of schoolhouse curricula and collaboration among distributed learners. These technologies connect the field Army to Army schoolhouses, simultaneously improving course currency and supporting training in the field. The impact of lifelong learning on organizational excellence seems clear. However, it is unknown how LLCs promote readiness using educational technology and how LLC effectiveness should be measured. The purpose of this research was to develop a comprehensive, generalizable framework for conceptualizing the effectiveness of LLCs and for capturing the drivers of success. The framework and associated metrics were used to conduct an evaluation of a pilot LLC located at Fort Leavenworth. This evaluation indicated the importance of taking a causal approach. An assessment of outcomes alone would have indicated that the initiative had achieved its goals but would have obscured the fact that some of these goals--teaching and learning effectiveness--were achieved largely independently of the use of learning technologies. The basis of the framework in theory makes it generalizable not only across current and future LLCs, but also across other blended learning initiatives, addressing a gap in the scholarly literature regarding the effectiveness assessment of educational technology.

Kunhardt, 2015 The first African American photographer to be hired full time by Life magazine, Gordon Parks was often sent on assignments involving social issues that his white colleagues were not asked to cover. In 1950 he returned on one such assignment to his hometown of Fort Scott in southeastern Kansas: he was to provide photographs for a piece on segregated schools and their impact on black children in the years prior to Brown v. Board of Education. Parks intended to revisit early memories of his birthplace, many involving serious racial discrimination, and to discover what had become of the 11 members of his junior high school graduation class since his departure 20 years earlier. But when he arrived only one member of the class remained in Fort Scott, the rest having followed the well-worn paths of the Great Migration in search of better lives in urban centers such as St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbus and Chicago. Heading out to those cities Parks found his friends and their families and photographed them on their porches, in their parlors and dining rooms, on their way to church and working at their jobs, and interviewed them about their decision to leave the segregated system of their youth and head north. His resulting photo essay was slated to appear in Life in the spring of 1951, but was ultimately never published. This book showcases the 80-photo series in a single volume for the first time, offering a sensitive and visually arresting view of our country's racialized history. Gordon Parks (1912-2006) was born into poverty and segregation in Fort Scott, Kansas. The self-taught photographer also found success as a film director, author and composer. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts and over 50 honorary degrees.
