fort leonard wood basic training address: Letters to Boot Camp Hayden Hodges, 2012-05-23 From July to Sept. 2014 all book sales will go to housing our homeless veterans here in the US. Check out http: //www.gofundme.com/b34yes for more information. Thank you! Letters to Boot Camp provides the reader with a heart wrenching and awe inspiring look into the lives of a mother and her son as he made his way through Boot Camp on Parris Island. - Once they're shipped out to Boot Camp, the only things that those of us left at home can really do for them is to write and pray. And if you're lucky, smuggle in the occasional treat. (I did.) It wasn't easy, but I wrote him every day, and he wrote me as often as he could. Inside these pages you'll find our personal story, our personal letters, and a good deal of information you may find useful. I like to think of Parris Island as a place of miraculous change and growth. Yeah, change isn't easy, and growing often hurts, but the end result is worth every bit of it. - - On November 7, 2011, in a hotel lobby, I smiled and gave my son one last big hug. I told him I loved him and how proud I was of him. The last thing I said was, You go kick some ass Baby, and I'll be there waiting when you're done. He had to go, so with that I turned around and walked out. Yes, I did look back, and yes, he did grin and wave. From there he would go to MEPS one last time and then get on a bus with all his new best buddies to Parris Island where they would be made into Marines. - |

fort leonard wood basic training address: With It Or in It Bacil Donovan Warren, 2016-02-24 Using humor and frank candor, author Bacil Donovan Warren shares his personal experience, as well as that of his fellow tankers, as part of the US Army's 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment (the Brave Rifles) in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Warren recounts the initial shock of hearing about Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and his Regiment's preparation for deployment during Operation Desert Shield. He describes the stress and sometimes mind-numbing boredom of being deployed deep in the desert of Saudi Arabia, constantly preparing for a possible Iraqi invasion. He recalls the terrifying experience of the start of the air war of Operation Desert Storm and the workmanlike action during combat against Iraq's Republican Guard forces during Operation Desert Sabre. With It or in It brings clarity and focus to their unceasing efforts to bring the conflict to a swift and decisive end. Finally, Warren describes the triumphant return of the Brave Rifles to Ft. Bliss, Texas, and the waiting arms of their families and loved ones. |

fort leonard wood basic training address: R.A.W.: Robert A. Waller, 2021-08-16 Can a Depression Era Midwestern farm boy attending a one-room country school find success in the world unfolding around him? This autobiography addresses that general question by answering several queries into major events of these ninety years. What was learning like in a one-room country school of the late 1930s and early 1940s? How fares the first in his family to attend high school and then continue to earn bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees? How did experiences in military service shape the development of this individual? At two major land grant universities, how were issues of integration, war protest, cultural advancement, and academic expansion addressed. In retirement, what adventures lay in extensive travel and enrichment teaching? The answers to these questions are found in annual budget books dating to marriage in 1952, letters from occupation Germany, academic year calendars, family photo collections, Christmas newsletters, and the memories that these stir. |

fort leonard wood basic training address: Orphan's Asylum Mike Krecioch, 2008-02-20 Welcome to Orphans Asylum by Mike Krecioch. The author has experienced orphanage life and now has written his story. How the author and his two siblings wind up in a large orphanagewhile both parents are aliveis the central issue of the story. You will be transported back to the early 1950s to experience the orphanage life with all its smells, sounds, and tastes. What was it truly like to live within the confines of an orphanage with all the daily routines? This is a story about another time and place, told with grace and honesty. Saint Hedwig Orphanage (19111961), located in Niles, Illinois, at Harlem and Touhy avenues, was more than an orphanage to more than seven thousand children. It was a familya family of predominantly Polish children. Some were true orphans; others were children of broken homes. Under the direction of Monsignor Francis S. Rusch (18841959), the task of parenting and educating the children was entrusted to the Felician Sisters. The site of Saint Hedwig Orphanage, is now comprised of modern multifamily condominiums. But to those who attended Saint Hedwig, their time there will never be forgotten. All the children who called Saint Hedwig their home from 1911 to 1961 will always be remembered. Saint Hedwig alumni and their families continue to keep in touch through a newsletter entitled The Hedwigian II, which is published three times a year. When Saint Hedwig Orphanage was established, it consisted of one building. On July 12, 1911, sixty-three Polish children were transferred from Saint Josephs Orphanage to Saint Hedwig. Further construction took place, and ultimately, Saint Hedwig consisted of ten buildings on more than forty acres of land. These buildings remained the orphanage home up until 1961, when the buildings were renovated to become the junior college department of University of Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary. In 1968, the school became a four-year college and was renamed Niles College of Loyola University. The Archdiocese of Chicago ultimately sold the site to developers, who razed the orphanage buildings and constructed multifamily condominiums. For those who would like to find out what orphanage life was like during those times, you must read Orphans Asylum. |
