emp attacks in history: Nuclear EMP Attack Scenarios and Combined-arms Cyber Warfare Peter Vincent Pry, 2017 Nuclear EMP attack is part of the military doctrines, plans and exercises of Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran for a revolutionary new way of warfare against military forces and civilian critical infrastructures by cyber, sabotage, and EMP. Significantly, because EMP attack entails detonating a nuclear weapon at such high altitude that no blast or other prompt effects injurious to humans are delivered, only the EMP that immediately damages only electronics, potential adversaries do not appear to regard nuclear EMP attack as an act of nuclear warfare. Ignorance of the military doctrines of potential adversaries and a failure of U.S. strategic imagination, as noted in military writings of potentially hostile powers, is setting America up for an EMP Pearl Harbor. EMP is essentially an anti-technology weapon--and perhaps the perfect silver bullet to defeat and humble the high-tech military of the United States that is the basis for its claim to be the world's only superpower.
emp attacks in history: One Second After William R. Forstchen, 2011-04-26 A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons. New York Times best selling author William R. Forstchen now brings us a story which can be all too terrifyingly real...a story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, a war that will send America back to the Dark Ages...A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP). A weapon that may already be in the hands of our enemies. Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future...and our end.   emp attacks in history: The Long Road G. Michael Hopf, 2014-01-07 The End was just the beginning of the new world… Only six weeks have passed since a super-EMP attack devastated the United States, but already, life has changed dramatically. Most of America has become a wasteland filled with starving bands of people, mobs and gangs. Millions are dead and millions more are suffering, with no end in sight. For Gordon, Samantha, Sebastian, Cruz and Barone, the turmoil and chaos they dealt with in the early weeks after the attack will seem trivial in comparison to the collapse of society that plays out before their eyes. Uncertainty abounds as they all travel different paths in search of a safe place to call home. The only thing that is definite is that The Long Road will take its toll on all of them. For readers of Going Home by A. American, Lights Out by David Crawford, Lucifer’s Hammer by Jerry Pournelle and One Second After by William Forstchen
emp attacks in history: When the Lights Went Out David E. Nye, 2010-01-29 Blackouts—whether they result from military planning, network failure, human error, or terrorism—offer snapshots of electricity's increasingly central role in American society. Where were you when the lights went out? At home during a thunderstorm? During the Great Northeastern Blackout of 1965? In California when rolling blackouts hit in 2000? In 2003, when a cascading power failure left fifty million people without electricity? We often remember vividly our time in the dark. In When the Lights Went Out, David Nye views power outages in America from 1935 to the present not simply as technical failures but variously as military tactic, social disruption, crisis in the networked city, outcome of political and economic decisions, sudden encounter with sublimity, and memories enshrined in photographs. Our electrically lit-up life is so natural to us that when the lights go off, the darkness seems abnormal. Nye looks at America's development of its electrical grid, which made large-scale power failures possible and a series of blackouts from military blackouts to the “greenout” (exemplified by the new tradition of “Earth Hour”), a voluntary reduction organized by environmental organizations. Blackouts, writes Nye, are breaks in the flow of social time that reveal much about the trajectory of American history. Each time one occurs, Americans confront their essential condition—not as isolated individuals, but as a community that increasingly binds itself together with electrical wires and signals.
emp attacks in history: EMP Electromagnetic Pulse Bobby Bear, 2020-04-07 If you are looking for a guide to discover the principles behind electromagnetic pulses, then keep reading... Electromagnetic pulses are created by nuclear explosions. North Korea is actively threatening to test nuclear bombs and releasing radiation into the environment. If North Korea tested a nuclear bomb near the US, the electromagnetic pulses could potentially stop all the electrical devices in the United States. The electromagnetic pulse produces a burst of radiation. Scientists strongly feel that if North Korea fires off a nuclear weapon, it will cause an electromagnetic pulse. The electromagnetic pulse could not only destroy electronic devices but could also wipe out a significant portion of the population in the United States in one blow. We need to be proactive and protect our homes with survival techniques, so we can survive the very real likelihood of these attacks. A sign that an area, region, or country is affected by EMP is when all electronic devices shut down at once. When there are many electromagnetic pulses occur at the same time, they can physically destroy a large number of computer devices, cell phones, and other devices due to the sudden buildup of magnetism. Power transformers would be impacted as well causing blackouts throughout the country, even in areas that weren't directly affected by the blast as they will be taken down because they are connected to the same grid. The severity of the nuclear explosion will depend on the height of where the bomb was dropped. The electromagnetic pulse can be of low frequency and can be of high ultraviolet wavelengths. The US military considers a detonated warhead of this type extremely hazardous. North Korea has threatened numerous times to detonate this type of warhead near the US. When detonated, this warhead could kill millions of people if done in the right place. It is known as HEMP or high-altitude electromagnetic pulse. In addition, the effects of HEMP on the earth could interact with the Earth's magnetic field, causing unknown damage in the long run. This book covers the following topics: What is Electromagnetic Pulses? Nuclear EMP, CME and RF Weapons History of Electromagnetic Pulse Ground Zero of an EMP Effects of an EMP Preparing for an EMP attack Preparation at Home What are the uses of a Faraday Cage?   emp attacks in history: How to Survive an Emp Attack Nicholas Randall, 2017-09 The information in this book will save your life. Intelligence reports and military experts have concluded long ago that an attack on the United States by an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) won't just be devastating, it might be inevitable. If an EMP were to burst two hundred and fifty miles over the center of the United States, it would destroy most if not all of the power infrastructure in the country from coast to coast, and send us back to the pre-electricity age within mere seconds. The survival rate for an EMP attack is estimated to be between just ten and twenty percent. The majority of people who die will do so from disease, starvation, dehydration, suicide, and murder. The power supply would not get back up and running for years. Almost all technological devices would cease working immediately. The production and delivery of our basic necessities, including water, food, medical items, and manufacturing will end. The United States will have instantly been transformed into a dark, cold, and lawless world without power. It will leave three hundred and fifty million citizens starving, dehydrated, and desperate. The good news, however, is you don't have to become a victim in this horrifying scenario. This EMP preparedness book will teach you ten very simple and yet highly effective steps on how to prepare for life before, during, and after a future EMP attack. These ten steps are: -Step #1: What Is An EMP Attack? -Step #2: What Will An EMP Attack Look Like? -Step #3: What Do You Need To Do During An EMP Attack? -Step #4: The Most Dangerous Places To Be During An EMP Attack -Step #5: What Will Survive An EMP? -Step #6: Building A Faraday Cage To Protect Your Electronics -Step #7: Buying An Affordable EMP Proof Vehicle -Step #8: EMP Attack Survival Gear Checklist -Step #9: Moving Toward Self-Sufficiency For Life After An EMP Attack -Step #10: EMP Attack Questions and Answers This book is intended to teach anyone how to be safely and effectively prepare for an EMP disaster. There is much you will learn in this book, regardless of whether you are new to this subject or have researched EMP attacks already. So turn the page and start reading! You can keep this book as a handy reference guide for the rest of your life so you can refer back to it at any point in the future. Ultimately, the information in this book won't just serve as the difference between life-and-death for you, it will for your loved ones as well.

emp attacks in history: Getting MAD: Nuclear Mutual Assured Destruction, Its Origins and Practice , 2004 Nearly 40 years after the concept of finite deterrence was popularized by the Johnson administration, nuclear Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) thinking appears to be in decline. The United States has rejected the notion that threatening population centers with nuclear attacks is a legitimate way to assure deterrence. Most recently, it withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, an agreement based on MAD. American opposition to MAD also is reflected in the Bush administration's desire to develop smaller, more accurate nuclear weapons that would reduce the number of innocent civilians killed in a nuclear strike. Still, MAD is influential in a number of ways. First, other countries, like China, have not abandoned the idea that holding their adversaries' cities at risk is necessary to assure their own strategic security. Nor have U.S. and allied security officials and experts fully abandoned the idea. At a minimum, acquiring nuclear weapons is still viewed as being sensible to face off a hostile neighbor that might strike one's own cities. Thus, our diplomats have been warning China that Japan would be under tremendous pressure to go nuclear if North Korea persisted in acquiring a few crude weapons of its own. Similarly, Israeli officials have long argued, without criticism, that they would not be second in acquiring nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Indeed, given that Israelis surrounded by enemies that would not hesitate to destroy its population if they could, Washington finds Israel's retention of a significant nuclear capability totally understandable.
emp attacks in history: The Long Sunday Peter Vincent Pry, 2016-10-25 In the opening paragraphs of the 9/11 Commission Report published in the wake of the attacks of September 11th 2001, the term failure of imagination is repeated three times. Specifically, Across the government, there were failures of imagination, policy, capabilities, and management. Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, Director of the EMP Task Force and the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, both congressional advisory boards, has served in the House Armed Services Committee and the CIA. His new book will help policymakers better imagine the most dangerous threat to our survival - nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) - and how our nation's adversaries have demonstrated capability and intent to use EMP against the U.S. and our allies. The Long Sunday--Election Day 2016 - Inauguration Day 2017--Nuclear EMP Attack Scenarios warns that the EMP threat is not merely theoretical, but real, and could be upon us as soon as the 74-days between Election Day and Inauguration Day, which period Dr. Pry describes as The Long Sunday. The short monograph does not predict that a nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack is likely to occur between the national elections on November 8 and the next presidential inauguration on January 20. But it is a sign of just how deeply troubled and unpredictable are the times in which we now live, when almost every day brings another unpleasant surprise, that any or all of the scenarios this report shall describe are entirely plausible. The unpleasant surprise is a high-altitude nuclear EMP attack that could permanently blackout the nation's electric grid and kill 90 percent of Americans through starvation and societal collapse, warns the Congressional EMP Commission and The Long Sunday. A true Paul Revere of our generation, Dr. Pry warns EMP is a threat unique in history, empowering failed states and terrorists to destroy Western Civilization. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on a Sunday, when they knew our guard was down. We hope that Dr. Pry's book will correct the failure of imagination about the existential threat from EMP, and avert an electronic Pearl Harbor against entire nations. We believe the survival of America and our allies depends upon it.

emp attacks in history: Defense's Nuclear Agency 1947-1997 (DTRA History Series) Defense Threat Reduction Agency, 2003-09 This official history was originally printed in very small numbers in 2002. Defense's Nuclear Agency, 1947-1997 traces the development of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP), and its descendant government organizations, from its original founding in 1947 to 1997. After the disestablishment of the Manhattan Engineering District (MED) in 1947, AFSWP was formed to provide military training in nuclear weapons' operations. Over the years, its sequential descendant organizations have been the Defense Atomic Support Agency (DASA) from 1959 to 1971, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) from 1971 to 1996, and the Defense Special Weapons Agency (DSWA) from 1996 to 1998. In 1998, DSWA, the On-Site Inspection Agency, the Defense Technology Security Administration, and selected elements of the Office of Secretary of Defense were combined to form the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).
emp attacks in history: Blackout Wars Peter Vincent Pry, 2015-11-25 Blackout Wars is about the historically unprecedented threat to our electronic civilization from its dependence on the electric power grid. Most Americans have experienced temporary blackouts, and regard them as merely an inconvenience. Some Americans have experienced more protracted local and regional blackouts, as in the aftermaths of Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina, and may be better able to imagine the consequences of a nationwide blackout lasting months or years, that plunges the entire United States into the dark. In such a nightmare blackout, the entire population of the United States could be at risk. There would be no food. No water. Communications, transportation, industry, business and finance--all of the critical infrastructures that support modern civilization and the lives of the American people would be paralyzed by collapse of the electric power grid. Millions could die. How could a catastrophic blackout happen? Threats to the electric power grid are posed by cyber attack, sabotage, a geomagnetic super-storm, and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the high-altitude detonation of a nuclear weapon. Blackout Wars warns that terrorists and rogue states are developing a revolutionary new military strategy that could exploit all of these threats in combination, including exploiting the opportunity of severe weather or a geo-storm, to collapse the national electric grid and all the critical infrastructures. It would be the fall of American civilization. For the first time in history, the most dysfunctional societies, like North Korea that cannot even feed its own people, or even non-state actors like terrorists, could destroy the most successful societies on Earth--by means of a Blackout War. Attacking the electric grid enables an adversary to strike at the technological and societal Achilles Heel of U.S. military and economic power. Blackout Wars likens this new Revolution in Military Affairs to Nazi Germany's Blitzkrieg strategy, secretly developed and tested in low-profile experiments during the 1930s, sprung upon the Allies in 1939-1941 in a series of surprise attacks that nearly enabled the Third Reich to win World War II. Just as the West was asleep to the threat from the Blitzkrieg, so today U.S. and Western elites are blind to the looming threat from a Blackout War. Fortunately, where the Federal government is failing to protect the national electric grid, State governments have legal authority and the technical capability to protect their electric grids within their State boundaries, and so spare their citizens from the worst consequences of a protracted blackout. Maine, Virginia, Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma Texas, Colorado and other States have initiatives underway to protect their grids and their peoples from the existential threat that is nuclear EMP attack, and from other hazards that could cause a catastrophic blackout. Ominously, this necessary trend toward decentralization of a vital national security responsibility from the Federal government to State governments is eerily reminiscent of the late Roman Empire. When Rome could no longer defend its cities from the barbarians, the cities built walls to defend themselves. Now that Washington cannot or will not defend the United States from nuclear EMP attack, some States are building walls to protect their electric grids and peoples from the new barbarians. Blackout Wars is the story of these heroic efforts by individual legislators and citizens to be Horatio on the Bridge defending their States and peoples against perhaps the greatest threat that has ever challenged civilization. Most of all, Blackout Wars is a handbook on why and how the States must meet this challenge, and a clarion call to the States to defend themselves.
emp attacks in history: Blackout Warfare Peter Pry, 2020-09 Blackout Warfare is the term used in this report to describe a revolutionary new way of warfare planned by Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran that is still little understood in the United States, but poses an imminent and existential threat to Western Civilization. These potential adversaries plan to use cyber-attacks, sabotage, and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons in combination to blackout national electric grids to achieve quick and decisive victory. Blackout Warfare that paralyzes the U.S. electric grid and other life-sustaining critical infrastructures--communications, transportation, natural gas and petroleum, business and industry, food and water infrastructures, and the military--could kill most Americans. The EMP Commission estimates up to 90% of the U.S. population could die from a nationwide blackout lasting one year. The military would be paralyzed by a nationwide blackout, as CONUS military bases depend for 99% of their electricity upon the civilian electric grid. For the first time in the West, this report fights back against looming catastrophe by thinking about and planning for Blackout Warfare the way our potential adversaries do.

The clock is ticking. One second after. One year after. In poll after poll, one of the threats facing our nation is the use of an electromagnetic pulse weapon to cause a collapse of our critical infrastructure. There are many bad actors on the international stage capable of terrorism on a massive scale. The list is long, including Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Syria and now even terrorist groups like ISIS. Each is capable of wreaking havoc in the US by shutting down our power grid and enjoying the resulting chaos. EMP is a primer on the threats we face as a nation from the rogue nations mentioned above. It explores the history of the electromagnetic pulse technology, and discusses its use for both military and non-military purposes. The clock is ticking.

The electric power system is a complex cyber-physical system composed of a network of millions of components spread out across the continent. These components are owned, operated, and regulated by thousands of different entities. Power system operators work hard to assure safe and reliable service, but large outages occasionally happen. Given the nature of the system, there is simply no way that outages can be completely avoided, no matter how much time and money is devoted to such an effort. The system's reliability and resilience can be improved but never made perfect. Thus, system owners, operators, and regulators must prioritize their investments based on potential benefits. Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation's Electricity System focuses on identifying, developing, and implementing strategies to increase the power system's resilience in the face of events that can cause large-area, long-duration outages: blackouts that extend over multiple service areas and last several days or longer. Resilience is not just about lessening the likelihood that these outages will occur. It is also about limiting the scope and impact of outages when they do occur, restoring power rapidly afterwards, and learning from these experiences to better deal with events in the future.

Finally, a book that not only explains how this is possible in a very easy-to-understand presentation but also dispels all the EMP myths and hype circulating the internet. Not only will the ABCs of EMP help you understand the threat, but it also includes lots of commonsense ways to be better prepared. What's true? What's hype? What will an EMP actually do, and what can it not do? The answers are inside!

emp attacks in history: UFOs and Nukes Robert L. Hastings, 2017-05-12 SECOND EDITION-REVISED AND UPDATEDThe reality of UFO incursions at American nuclear weapons facilities has been convincingly established. Hundreds of U.S. military veterans now openly discuss these ominous incidents and thousands of declassified government documents substantiate their revelations.Over the past four decades, renowned researcher Robert Hastings has interviewed more than 150 of those veterans regarding their involvement in these astounding cases. On September 27, 2010, CNN live-streamed his UFOs and Nukes press conference in Washington D.C. during which former U.S. Air Force officers described numerous nuclear missiles mysteriously malfunctioning moments after a disc-shaped craft was observed hovering near their underground launch silos. That shocking episode, in March 1967, was merely the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Documented UFO activity occurred at a plutonium processing plant in Washington State as early as January 1945, months prior to the atomic bombings in Japan. Another incident, in October 2010, involved one missile base in Wyoming being unable to communicate with several of its missile launch control capsules just as a huge cigar-shaped craft slowly flew over them.Significantly, documents smuggled out of Russia in the 1990s confirm that Soviet nukes were also the focus of UFO interest during the Cold War era. On one occasion, in October 1982, a number of missiles temporarily activated for launch, as terrified officers attempted to disrupt the unauthorized count-down. After 15 seconds, the anomaly terminated and the equipment returned to standby status. While this was taking place, an enormous disc silently hovered over the base.In short, the evidence presented in UFOs & Nukes makes clear that humans' deadliest weapons have been, since their development and use during World War II, under intense scrutiny by still-unidentified observers possessing tremendously advanced technology.Given these disclosures, it seems evident that the UFO-Nukes Connection is highly significant and perhaps even the key reason these mysterious aerial craft have appeared in our skies over the past seven decades.

Or is it a manifestation of a growing collective psyche that has learned, from traumatic events throughout our history, that preparedness is critical to human survival? For new preppers who think the worst is yet to come, this book offers a walk through history that shows the worst has been here before. For those who wonder why so many people are concerned about being prepared, this book will show that when the worst has made an appearance, those who weathered it best were those who were prepared. For those already familiar with history’s worst who think, “THAT will never happen again!”—this book offers a reminder of the Wall Street adage: “Past performance is no guarantee of future results.” For those who wonder what a prepper is, this book offers a look at what they used to be—and what they are today.

emp attacks in history: Apocalypse Unknown Peter Pry, 2013-02-01 Americans are not being told by the news media about the biggest story of their lifetimes. Every night every television news channel is desperately worried about the global economic crisis, looming recession, protracted unemployment, Wall Street and the housing market, government spending and taxation, and going over the fiscal cliff. But there is a much bigger untold story about a threat to the global economy--and to the very existence of global civilization--yet so rarely mentioned anywhere that, as described by the title of this book, it is an Apocalypse Unknown. The biggest story is this. December 2012 commenced the solar maximum, and significantly increased the possibility of a geomagnetic super-storm, something like a space hurricane, that could collapse electric grids and all the critical infrastructures that support modern civilization, and the lives of billions worldwide. The Sun is a gigantic ongoing thermonuclear explosion, equivalent to billions of nuclear warheads detonating every second, contained by gravity. During the solar maximum the Sun hurls into space more solar flares and coronal mass ejections--basically enormous chunks of itself, many times larger than the Earth. If one of these solar torpedoes hits the Earth, it could generate a powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that would collapse electric power grids everywhere, plunging every modern nation into a protracted blackout. Perhaps permanently. Worldwide, billions could die. The Earth is overdue for a solar super-storm that could inflict a global catastrophe. The last such super-storm, called the Carrington Event, happened in 1859. It caused fires in telegraph stations and destroyed the newly laid trans-Atlantic cable. But in those horse and buggy days civilization did not depend upon electricity. The Congressional EMP Commission estimated that a Carrington class geomagnetic super-storm probably occurs every century. Arithmetic suggests that, as of this writing in December 2012, as we enter another solar maximum, we are 53 years overdue for another Carrngton Event. There is another part of this biggest story never told by the major media. Nightly news shows, to the extent they discuss foreign affairs, sometimes mention Iran's nuclear weapons program, and how it poses a threat to Israel and could provoke a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. The untold story is that a nuclear Iran--or nuclear terrorists, or North Korea, China, Russia or any state or non-state actor armed with a single nuclear missile--could make an EMP attack on the United States that would collapse the life-sustaining critical infrastructures, and threaten the existence of American civilization. The damage from a nuclear EMP attack would be deeper and harder to repair than the damage from a natural EMP catastrophe caused by a Carrington class geomagnetic super-storm. Making a nuclear EMP attack is relatively easy to do. Iran openly writes about making a nuclear EMP attack to eliminate the United States as an actor on the world stage. Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina have given America a slight foreshadowing of what life without electricity would be like, in the aftermath of an EMP inflicted by terrorists or the Sun. This book is the story of a handful of political leaders, scientists, strategists, and grassroots activists who have struggled against gargantuan bureaucracies in government and industry to protect the nation from an EMP catastrophe. It tells where we are winning--and why we may lose. Perhaps the most important message of this book is that Washington is so blind and so broken that The People need to intervene, need to ride to the rescue like the U.S. cavalry of old, to make the ignorant, stubborn and negligent bureaucrats in government and industry do the right thing. National EMP preparedness needs to happen--now. You need to read this book as it is fundamentally about saving your life. Just by knowing, you become part of the solution.
emp attacks in history: Split By Sun: The Tragic History Of The Sustainocene Thomas Faunce, 2018-11-22 A FUTURE EARTH IN WHICH EVERY ROAD AND BUILDING UTILISES NANOTECHNOLOGY TO MAKE CLEAN FUEL, FOOD AND FERTILISER JUST FROM WATER, SUN AND AIR.When agent Jean Moulin investigates the mysterious connections between a murdered woman in Hampstead and assassination attempts on the President of the Whole Earth Council, he's led back to the origins of the Global Synthetic Photosynthesis Project in Namibia as well as the forces that wish to destroy it and its visionary eco-gendered founder.Split by Sun is a witty and poetic novel that explores whether humanity is meant to globally deploy a solar energy technology to progress enforceable rights of ecosystems, electronic citizen voting on laws, the marriage of corporations to public goods, community-scale industry, the abolition of war and nuclear weapons, the facilitation of universal basic income, healthcare and education and the replacement of religion with widespread experience of unitive consciousness.
emp attacks in history: The History of Hydrogen Bomb and Why It Should Be Banned. John Richard Shanebrook, PhD, 2016-03-17 One of the first applications of the atomic bomb after Nuclear War I was to serve as the trigger for much more powerful hydrogen bombs. The explosion of an atom bomb emits nuclear radiation, heat energy, and photons. These emissions compress fusion fuel to thermonuclear conditions. From 1945 to 1949, the United States had a monopoly on nuclear weapons until August 29, 1949, when the USSR exploded its first nuclear device. Edward Teller was already actively working on the design of hydrogen bombs, but J. Robert Oppenheimer opposed these efforts. It was President Harry S. Truman who approved the US program to design, build, and test hydrogen bombs. Meanwhile, the USSR had been secretly working on nuclear weapons since 1941, with extensive help from several spies, including Klaus Fuchs. Both the United States and the USSR achieved early success with hydrogen bombs, as was demonstrated by hundreds of test explosions that spread radioactive fallout around the entire Earth. It was the US BRAVO test of a huge hydrogen explosive device on March 1, 1954, that brought matters to a conclusion. The radioactive fallout proved to be lethal over thousands of square miles. The result was an international ban on testing nuclear weapons in the atmosphere (1963). However, the Wizards of Armageddon were busily preparing to fight, and maybe win, future wars fought with hydrogen bombs. These plans included risky maneuvers with live hydrogen bombs on planes, submarines, and other mobile devices. Accidents happened, and many hydrogen bombs were lost, blown apart, or simply abandoned. The absolute worst aspect of hydrogen bomb explosions is global ecocide. The explosions are so powerful they harm the ozone layer and ignite huge fires on Earth that darken the skies. The latter was termed nuclear winter by Carl Sagan. The conclusion of this book is very simple. All hydrogen bombs should be banned, forever
