freightliner cruise control diagram: Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles National Research Council, Transportation Research Board, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences, Board on Energy and Environmental Systems, Committee to Assess Fuel Economy Technologies for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles, 2010-07-30 Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles evaluates various technologies and methods that could improve the fuel economy of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, transit buses, and work trucks. The book also recommends approaches that federal agencies could use to regulate these vehicles' fuel consumption. Currently there are no fuel consumption standards for such vehicles, which account for about 26 percent of the transportation fuel used in the U.S. The miles-per-gallon measure used to regulate the fuel economy of passenger cars. is not appropriate for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, which are designed above all to carry loads efficiently. Instead, any regulation of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles should use a metric that reflects the efficiency with which a vehicle moves goods or passengers, such as gallons per ton-mile, a unit that reflects the amount of fuel a vehicle would use to carry a ton of goods one mile. This is called load-specific fuel consumption (LSFC). The book estimates the improvements that various technologies could achieve over the next decade in seven vehicle types. For example, using advanced diesel engines in tractor-trailers could lower their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent by 2020, and improved aerodynamics could yield an 11 percent reduction. Hybrid powertrains could lower the fuel consumption of vehicles that stop frequently, such as garbage trucks and transit buses, by as much 35 percent in the same time frame. |

freightliner cruise control diagram: Energy-Efficient Driving of Road Vehicles Antonio Sciarretta, Ardalan Vahidi, 2019-08-01 This book elaborates the science and engineering basis for energy-efficient driving in conventional and autonomous cars. After covering the physics of energy-efficient motion in conventional, hybrid, and electric powertrains, the book chiefly focuses on the energy-saving potential of connected and automated vehicles. It reveals how being connected to other vehicles and the infrastructure enables the anticipation of upcoming driving-relevant factors, e.g. hills, curves, slow traffic, state of traffic signals, and movements of nearby vehicles. In turn, automation allows vehicles to adjust their motion more precisely in anticipation of upcoming events, and to save energy. Lastly, the energy-efficient motion of connected and automated vehicles could have a harmonizing effect on mixed traffic, leading to additional energy savings for neighboring vehicles. Building on classical methods of powertrain modeling, optimization, and optimal control, the book further develops the theory of energy-efficient driving. In addition, it presents numerous theoretical and applied case studies that highlight the real-world implications of the theory developed. The book is chiefly intended for undergraduate and graduate engineering students and industry practitioners with a background in mechanical, electrical, or automotive engineering, computer science or robotics. |

freightliner cruise control diagram: The Spy's Son Bryan Denson, 2015-05-05 The true account of the Nicholsons, the father and son who sold national secrets to Russia. “One of the strangest spy stories in American history” (Robert Lindsey, author of The Falcon and the Snowman). Investigative reporter and Pulitzer Prize finalist Bryan Denson tells the riveting story of the father and son co-conspirators who betrayed the United States. Jim Nicholson was one of the CIA’s top veteran case officers. By day, he taught spycraft at the CIA’s clandestine training center, The Farm. By night, he was a minivan-driving single father racing home to have dinner with his kids. But Nicholson led a double life. For more than two years, he had met covertly with agents of Russia’s foreign intelligence service and turned over troves of classified documents. In 1997, Nicholson became the highest-ranking CIA officer ever convicted of espionage. But his duplicity didn’t stop there. While behind the bars of a federal prison, the former mole systematically groomed the one person he trusted most to serve as his stand-in: his youngest son, Nathan. When asked to smuggle messages out of prison to Russian contacts, Nathan saw an opportunity to be heroic and to make his father proud. “Filled with fascinating details of the cloak-and-dagger techniques of KGB and CIA operatives, double agents, and spy catchers . . . A poignant and painful tale of family love, loyalty, manipulation and betrayal.” —The Oregonian |

freightliner cruise control diagram: Predictive Cruise Control for Road Vehicles Using Road and Traffic Information Péter Gáspár, Balázs Németh, 2018-11-19 This book focuses on the design of a multi-criteria automated vehicle longitudinal control system as an enhancement of the adaptive cruise control system. It analyses the effects of various parameters on the average traffic speed and the traction force of the vehicles in mixed traffic from a macroscopic point of view, and also demonstrates why research and development in speed control and predictive cruise control is important. The book also summarises the main steps of the system’s robust control design, from the modelling to its synthesis, and discusses both the theoretical background and the practical computation method of the control invariant sets. The book presents the analysis and verification of the system both in a simulation environment and under real-world conditions. By including the systematic design of the predictive cruise control using road and traffic information, it shows how optimization criteria can lead to multiobjective solutions, and the advanced optimization and control design methods required. The book focuses on a particular method by which the unfavourable effect of the traffic flow consideration can be reduced. It also includes simulation examples in which the speed design is performed, while the analysis is carried out in simulation and visualization environments. This book is a valuable reference for researchers and control engineers working on traffic control, vehicle control and control theory. It is also of interest to students and academics as it provides an overview of the strong interaction between the traffic flow and an individual vehicle cruising from both a microscopic and a macroscopic point of view. |
freightliner cruise control diagram: Design of a Cruise Control Deactivation Management System Thabo Jameson Selowa, 2023 As technology improves new ways are continuously being investigated to improve drivers' experiences and steer them safely through congested highways or open country roads. Connected and automated vehicles have been developed using communications with infrastructures (V21 communication) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. They are fitted with connected automated transit signal priority, eco-cruising, eco approach, and intersection control. Using such automation in vehicles reduces the high risk of accidents due to human errors, which alone account for 90% of crashes. However, despite the technological advancements, safety is still a major concern, particularly with the cruise control function, although it is said to be an accurate control with almost negligible reaction time when compared to the human driver. The study therefore aimed to design a cruise control deactivation management system by investigating the types of engineering failures that can endanger the driver and the surroundings. The study investigated the different road conditions that a vehicle is exposed to daily, using risk priority number (RPN) methodology to identify the failures that can endanger the driver and the surroundings. The study presents a recommended vibration level for each road profile at which the cruise control system management system should turn off. These high-level vibrations are captured when the vehicle drives through a pothole or drives over a speed cushion that alerts the driver to changed road conditions or drives into a road hump that the driver was unaware of, or when the vehicle veers out of control from the tar road into gravel or onto the shoulder of the road and side shoulders are the most dangerous road profiles. The study concluded by designing a prototype device that sends a signal to the engine control module to deactivate cruise control when the vibration intensity is = 0.4 m/s2. The unit is attached to the vehicle's brake lights. As high vibrations trigger/exceed the vibration sensor threshold, the relay is activated, completes the circuit for the brake lights, and switches off the cruise control system. |

freightliner cruise control diagram: Multi-object Adaptive Cruise Control Rainer Möbus, 2008 In this thesis the development and implementation of a multi-object adaptive cruise control (ACC) system is presented. A sensor fusion configuration as well as object tracking and sensor fusion algorithms are presented to obtain a thorough representation of the traffic scene ahead of an ACC-controlled vehicle. The sensor fusion configuration includes a 77GHz radar sensor and an IR laser sensor for object detection. A monocular CCD camera system is employed for lane recognition and the lane assignment of the detected objects. Experimental results of all presented algorithms are given. The control model and the control objectives of a multi-object ACC system are presented. The multi-object ACC problem is looked at as a constrained optimal control problem incorporating the dynamics of the traffic scene, the driver's desire to cruise at a certain velocity, the lane assignment of the other road users, the objective of respecting certain minimum distances to other road users and to adapt the velocity to the flow of the other road users. Additionally, overtaking a preceding vehicle on the right can be avoided. The choice of the relevant object is implicitly determined by the cost function and the optimization criteria. Constraints imposed by physical limitations as well as by comfort and safety considerations can be included and a receding horizon control strategy is applied. The multi-object ACC problem is looked at as a constrained finite time optimal control (CFTOC) problem with a mixed logical dynamical (MLD) system description. With an efficient way to represent and evaluate the explicit solution to the corresponding multi-parametric mixed integer quadratic program, it is possible to include all desired control objectives in the problem formulation and still obtain an explicit solution suitable for real-time operation. Simulation results of this multi-object ACC control approach are presented and the controller is compared to a reference ACC controller. With the efficient controller representation the multi-object ACC controller is implemented on the ECU of a standard production platform vehicle to confirm the simulation results in real traffic. |
